Northerly Most Commercial Avocado Orchard in the Western Hemisphere???
Shelter Bay is aptly named as it seems to have a magical microclimate despite being 260 miles north of San Francisco and over 40 degrees north latitude. This is closer to Oregon than to San Francisco, and over 500 miles further north than the existing major commercial production areas of California's Central Coast. This climate anomaly may be ideal for avocado production on a commercial scale giving a more sustainable avocado choice to the local residents and even those further to the north since environmental consequence of transport would be greatly diminished due to the close proximity of the production zone to the end users. And all cascading economic benefits from production to trucking would be enjoyed on a more local level to where the fruit is actually consumed. Tour the garden and orchard of local resident Trent Sanders living the dream in the far north on Lost Cost and pushing the growing limits of this most wonderful fruit. Trent goes big and adds to his 20 tree orchard by ordering another 100 mature trees from Golden Gate Palms Nursery.
